Anno Sacri season ticket / 1

Framing this concert, like a motto, is a celebrated line from Samuel Rodigast's chorale verse: "Whatever my God ordains is right". Tradition has it that Rodigast, a professor at Jena University, wrote this hymn for his seriously ill friend Gastorius in 1675; Gastorius composed the melody for it in his sick-bed.

This chorale features in the first and last cantatas of today’s concert. The careful listener will naturally notice a host of other interesting things, such as the melody that appears in both the choral movement of Weinen, Klagen cantata and in the musical texure of Jesu, der du meine Seele, or  wonderful moments in the orchestra, which rival the most splendid concertos of the era.

Bach: Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen – Cantata, BWV 12.
Bach: Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben? – Cantata, BWV 8.
