Dohnányi Season ticket / 4

The grand masters, from Bach through Haydn and Mozart to Stravinsky had no qualms about using popular, well-known tunes, motifs which had little artistic value but could be well exploited: for instance, they could be whistled, or prompted folk to dance. Astor Piazzolla found his musical raw material in tango, Stravinsky in Petrushka quoted Russian popular songs and organ-grinder's music as well as the classic Viennese waltz; and in the dance numbers from John Adams's notorious opera we can hear the foxtrot. Gergely Vajda's latest work is inspired by a world hit, a song written by Rezső Seress in the 1930s, known worldwide as Gloomy Sunday.
