In the last concert season Nathan Giem, one of the members of the Radio Symphony Orchestra, was made concertmaster with the "Artist of the Season" award. Born in America with strong links to Hungary, he is active as a conductor too, and has taken the baton before excellent orchestras, such as the Tokyo Philharmonic. In Brahms' violin concerto he appears as the soloist, and after the interval we hear composition which in its time could hardly have been programmed with the Brahms piece. Ferenc Liszt's mass was written for the consecration of the basilica in Esztergom, and is an outstanding work of the 1850s. Rich in imagination, emotion, and ideas, it is a masterfully crafted, mature and unified composition. "It is a worthy partner to the great orchestral works, piano works and concertos of the era," writes Liszt researcher Klára Hamburger.
