Some doubt that humour can be depicted in music, others believe taht musical humour is the highest form of humour. Perhaps András Schiff was right when he remarked "how much easier it is to bring the audience to tears, than to get them to laugh. Tragedy, sadness, renunciation and grief demand of the listener a gravity and sympathy with which he readily identifies." But why does an auditorium not erupt in laughter if a moment in music is witty, humorous, or even downright funny? Tomfoolery and parody apart, is it possible to smuggle humour into a musical work? And of course the crucial question: can we laugh at a century-old joke?
