One of the summer’s most significant classical music events will once again invite opera lovers to Müpa Budapest’s Béla Bartók National Concert Hall between 4th and 30th June. The performances will also be accessible to audiences from home as Hungary’s national radio station Bartók Rádio – preserving its already established tradition – will again be broadcasting selected productions from the festival live this year.
The 2026 programme series centres on the culmination of Richard Wagner’s monumental oeuvre entitled ‘Ring of the Nibelung (Der Ring des Nibelungen)’. For this year’s event, the Hungarian Radio Art Groups have made a special commitment and decided to stage the entire tetralogy not even once but twice – in both instances during four consecutive evenings in accordance with Wagner’s original idea. This ‘double Ring’ structure is exceptionally rare in the sphere of international opera performance, as it places an extraordinary logistical, musical and vocal burden on the performers, while – at the same time – the staging follows the work’s original dramatic arc as closely as possible.

Directed by Hartmut Schörghofer and conducted by Ádám Fischer the performances feature internationally renowned soloists who regularly return to Wagner’s lifework. Among others, Tomasz Konieczny plays Wotan whereas singers including Magnus Vigilius, Jochen Schmeckenbecher and Tijl Faveyts also revisit Wagner’s work and represent defining artistic presence in various roles across the tetralogy.
This year’s Budapest Wagner Days will mark not only anniversaries but will also include a significant farewell. This season, key figure in the festival’s history Ádám Fischer will conduct the complete ‘Ring’ tetralogy for the last time at Müpa Budapest. For two decades, conductor Ádám Fischer has shaped the artistic identity of Budapest Wagner Days, and through his work has made this festival one of the leading centres of international Wagner recital practice.
The special significance of 2026 is reinforced by several parallel anniversaries: this year commemorates the 150th anniversary of the first performance of the complete ‘Ring’ cycle in Bayreuth, and also this year marks 20 years that Budapest Wagner Days has been a steady and recurrent event on the international festival scene.
