The liturgy of Easter Sunday in the Lutheran tradition is perhaps less emphasized compared to Good Friday. This seems to be reflected in Bach’s oeuvre, where his creative and performance energies were so deeply tied to his passion music that no Easter Sunday music from his mature period has survived. The Christ lag in Todesbanden cantata, composed around 1707-1708, is a rare exception. Its style closely resembles the high-quality church music of Buxtehude, both in orchestration and composition. It can thus be reasonably assumed that Bach composed it after his famous trip to Lübeck in 1705, during the final years of his time in Arnstadt
