Hisham Gabr: Sindbad, the Omani Sailor

Müpa - Béla Bartók National Concert Hall 2026-04-12 Sunday 19:00

The joint production of the Royal Opera House of Oman and Müpa Budapest underlines the significance of the meeting of cultures. Sindbad, the hero of the opera, is an emblematic figure in Arabic culture. A superb mariner, he is also an embodiment of versatility, a renaissance man known the world over. His explorations of the world are also journeys into his own self, wherein he uncovers his own merits. Armed with the knowledge he has acquired, he undertakes seemingly impossible tasks to reveal the truth, defend his country’s honour and overcome evil. His reward is his love’s hand in marriage. This has been the second collaboration between director Csaba Káel, composer Hisham Gabr and the librettist, Nader Salah El-Din. This time, they sought to create music and a stage spectacle that transports the audience on an exciting, adventurous and fabulous voyage. The production organically incorporates the millennia-old treasures of Omani culture, from folk music and dance through decorative art, costumes, jewellery and architecture to the secrets of maritime navigation.
