J. S. Bach – Bálint Karosi: St. Mark Passion

Matthias Church 2026-10-21 Wednesday 20:00

LOST. MUSIC. RECONSTRUCTION.

After composing ‘St. John Passion’ and ‘St. Matthew Passion’, Bach premiered his ‘St. Mark Passion,’ composed on the basis of the Gospel of St. Mark, in 1731. The libretto of this work has survived in its entirety: it was written by Picander just like the libretto of ‘St. Matthew Passion’. The music was unfortunately lost. Music historians, however, have speculated that Bach used a series of his earlier compositions to create the music for ‘St. Mark Passion’, therefore the reconstruction of some of the excerpts of this work is not a hopeless job. In the past few decades, several music experts – including such highly renowned performers as Ton Koopman and Jordi Savall – have attempted to fully recreate this lost work. At this event, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of the Hungarian National Radio will perform a version of this music composed by Hungarian organist, conductor and composer Bálint Karosi, who is currently living in the United States.
