In the second half of the 18th century concert arias were a natural part of orchestral concerts and "academies". In the 19th century symphonic songs and song cycles fulfilled a similar function. As in the case of many a Romantic genre, Berlioz was in the vanguard, suffice to think of the orchestral version of Schubert Erlkönig or the song cycle Les nuits d'été. His example exerted an influence on Liszt, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Grieg, Ravel, and naturally on Russian composers, Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich and Rachmaninov.
