At the peak of his career as a composer in 1925 Arnold Schoenberg wrote his choral work Three Satires, in which he made fun of various trends in modern music. Composed to his own poems, he lambasted the middle-of-the-roaders, the folklorists and the Neoclassicists alike; the targets of the ironic nicknames are not difficult to identify, particularly in Stravinsky's case. He was given a telling epithet: Little Modernsky (Kleine Modernsky). In this concert by the soloists of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir there are of course many works that Schoenberg could not have known in 1925. What would he have made of Stravinsky's daringly experimental highly witty compositions?
